In Donald Trump’s ever-shrinking definition of who qualifies as a “real American,” public service workers are the latest to be excluded. The Trump campaign’s newest talking point targets Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz’s career in public service. The GOP’s strategy is “trashing public service” and “trying to suppress the votes of people of color,” says Thom Hartmann, syndicated radio host of The Thom Hartmann Program. This strategy stands in stark contrast to the Harris-Walz ticket, according to Christina Greer, associate professor of politics at Fordham University. “He drills down on their basest emotions, saying we must continue to exclude others so that ‘we’ can maintain our status as the true and real Americans,” she says. “I’m hoping that there is a segment of the population that is truly tired of this divisive politics.”Sept. 1, 2024
